Residents of Bungoma County have been called upon to be on the frontline when it comes to conserving the environment by ensuring they plant trees, among other measures.
Addressing education stakeholders at Kamusinga ACK primary school during a farewell ceremony of three teachers who had retired, Bungoma County Public Administration Chief Officer David Baraza Kibiti said it is the role of residents to conserve the environment, adding that trees attract rainfall.
He disclosed that as a County government, they have also been able to initiate several development projects in the County saying as the next general election approaches, they are banking on residents to be able to re-elect the Lusaka government on basis of development.
“In Kimilili for instance, several roads have been tarmacked and also street lights have been set in place to ensure a 24 hour economy is up and running, and these are just some of the development that has been achieved so far,” he said.
Kibiti also called upon the committees in charge of distributing free fertilizer from the County government of Bungoma to ensure a fair distribution process is achieved, saying the County government also procured subsidized fertilizer to ensure food security is achieved.
The Chief officer also called upon the committees in charge of bursaries from the County government to also ensure children from deserving families benefit from the fund as it is their only hope of being able to access education same as others in the society.
Kimilili west zone education officer Agnes Nyakundi cautioned teachers against caning pupils, saying according to the ministry’s policies, any teacher who will be found doing so will face stern action.
She also asked them to be keen on pupils’ reporting time to school and their departure time, saying they should be in school by 8am and go home in the evening by 3.30pm, indicating that they should be given homework instead of being allowed to stay extra hours in school.
