Bungoma town was brought to a standstill as furious youths took to the streets to voice their opposition against a plot to impeach National Assembly speaker Moses Masika Wetangula. The uproar comes after claims emerged suggesting that Wetangula has not relinquished his position as the leader of Ford Kenya, which some legislators believe constitutes a conflict of interest in his role as Speaker.
The protests were fueled by widespread anger and dissatisfaction over the ongoing attempts by a section of MPs to push for Wetangula’s ouster. Local youths voiced their strong opposition, stressing that the Speaker earned his position through his unwavering support for the Kenya Kwanza government during the 2022 election campaigns, particularly in Bungoma County.
One of the prominent voices in the protest, George Sinoko, reminded the crowd that Wetangula initially ran for the Bungoma senatorial seat and won, only to shift gears when President William Ruto, during a mass at Christ the King Church in Bungoma, urged the people to support Wetangula’s nomination as Speaker. Sinoko emphasized that the Speaker is impartial and has not shown any bias since assuming office.
Sinoko also stated, “It is not just about his position; it is about fairness and delivering on the promises he made to the people. Wetangula is not desperate for power but has always put the interests of Bungoma and the entire nation first.”
Rose Matere, another key voice in the protests, criticized those pushing for Wetangula’s impeachment, accusing them of hypocrisy. “It is unfortunate that some MPs are trying to remove Wetangula. They should focus on serving their constituencies and fulfilling their mandate, as their term is winding down in less than three years,” Matere remarked.
She went on to stress that Wetangula’s leadership as Speaker has been fair and balanced, and his removal would only distract from the important work of Parliament.
John Makuba, speaking from the office of the Senator, pointed out that Bungoma County played a crucial role in the declaration of William Ruto as the winner of the 2022 presidential election. He reminded the public that Speaker Wetangula’s leadership was key in securing the votes from the region, thus supporting the claim that Wetangula deserves to continue serving in his capacity.
“The people of Bungoma made a major contribution to President Ruto’s win. Speaker Wetangula should be allowed to continue his role without interference, as he has always been an advocate for the people of this region,” Makuba said.
Protesters made it clear that they would continue to take to the streets if anyone dares to challenge Wetangula’s position. The demonstrations are expected to persist as long as the impeachment motion is on the table.
