As the Ministry of education moves across the country to gather feedback and information regarding the implementation of the competency based curriculum, Bungoma County Knut and Kuppet officials have expressed their dissatisfaction with the system terming it strenuous to teachers.
In their submission Knut led by Bungoma east executive secretary Robert Mandila poked holes in the system saying the government has not fulfilled what it promised during the start.
He said the government has not employed enough teachers to facilitate the curriculum saying the few who have been employed are being overworked by teaching many pupils in grade seven and eight.
“Some pupils have never been taught some subjects including music and other practical lessons like swimming is a fallacy so let the government face the reality on the ground ” he said
Mr. Mandila added that facing out of P1 teachers was untimely saying up to now some who trained over ten years ago have not been employed saying demanding them to be retooled in a diploma course is so extraneous as they cannot afford the fees because of being jobless.
He asserted that the government must admit that it got it wrong and should revert to the old 844 system which he says was well structured.
Augustine Luketelo the Bungoma Kuppet executive secretary says the government promised to build enough infrastructure for the pupils saying on the ground the reality is very different.
He added that teachers should not be blamed for the failed implementation of the curriculum as they have always towed the line.
Bungoma County deputy Governor Jennifer Mbatiany said being in charge of Early childhood education they have done their best to provide a solid foundation to the children.
She disclosed that they have built several ECD centers in schools and are in the process of hiring more teachers to ensure the ratio of pupils to teachers is tenable.
Hon Mbatiany also said they will soon be launching a feeding program where the pupils will be fed with porridge to counter absenteeism.
Stephen Barongo, a director from the ministry of education, said the exercise is meant to collect views which will be incorporated by the government in its ongoing implementation of the curriculum.
