Busia woman representative Florence Mutua has called for urgent investigations into what could’ve caused the collapse of the Sigiri bridge in Budalang’i before the intended beneficiaries got to enjoy its function.
In a statement, Mutua asked the Jubilee Government to take stern action against the contractor for the evident substandard job that caused the collapse of the Sh1.2 billion bridge.
“Any government in place should ensure that well-intended projects are not done hurriedly for the purpose of scoring cheap political gains but instead any responsible government would take its time to ensure quality work. It must be noted that the very essence of building the bridge was out of the many deaths Sigiri village has experienced due to lack of it. Building another hi-tech death trap is an insult to the intelligence of the people of Busia County,” she said.
27 people were injured after the bridge linking Bunyala North and Bunyala South Wards collapsed with over 80 per cent of the works completed.
The incident came a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto visited the bridge and praised the contractors for the job well done.
Busia County Administration Police Commander Elisha Odhiambo said two people were seriously injured and rushed to Nangina Mission hospital, adding that 25 who were slightly injured were admitted to Port Victoria hospital.
