Busia County has recorded 54 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to information given by the Ministry of Health. All but one of the cases are truck drivers. This comes even as residents express fear that community infections might increase as a result of many positive cases among truck drivers at the border towns. In a recent press address, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe called out the indiscipline among truck drivers who leave their point of origin and head to Busia and Malaba without Covid-19 negative certificates and wait to be tested there, breaking all protocols in the process.
46 of the cases were picked up at the Malaba point of entry, 7 at Busia and 1 at the Alupe quarantine facility. Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has also expressed concerns, saying the health facilities in the County will come under immense pressure, with the Alupe mandatory quarantine facility already past its capacity.
On Saturday, Kenya confirmed 126 positive cases, the total number now up to 2,600. This is after 3,632 samples were tested. The highest number of recoveries was also recorded, after 63 people recovered and were discharged, with total recoveries now at 706.
