Two guards who were attacked by unknown assailants in Malaba on Sunday night succumbed to the injuries on Monday as they were undergoing treatment in Bungoma and Busia respectively.
Moses Emojong died at the Bungoma County and Referral Hospital about 10 hours after he was referred from Kocholia Sub County Hospital.
At Busia Referral Hospital, Alex Wabwire died at 1pm, six hours after admission. The hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. David Mukabi said Wabwire suffered severe head injuries.
Dr. Mukabi said Ignatius Wambongo had been referred to Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.
Philemon Odera, 58, who is recovering at Bungoma Referral hospital, said the attacks were executed simultaneously and this confirmed that it was a planned attack.
“I saw people passing by the shop I was guarding. I only gained consciousness when I was at Bungoma referral hospital,” he told the press at the hospital.
Attacks on night guards have become sporadic in the Western region. Last week three guards were killed in Webuye with a similar number succumbing to injuries in Kakamega.
The whereabouts of one the guards remains a mystery. Initial reports indicated three guards were admitted at Busia Referral Hospital but a spot check by West Media confirmed only two were present.
