Busia County woman representative Florence Mutua has announced plans to help women who engage in chang’aa brewing to get an alternative source of income.
Mutua has observed that most of those women engage in chang’aa brewing because of lack of alternative source of income,
“Am aware most women in Busia County engage in chang’aa brewing not because they like it but because they have no other source of income that can help them take care of their children considering that most of them are widows and single mothers. I have a program which will bring together the women and give them a chance to decide what income generating activity they want to engage in then my office will provide funds for them.”
Speaking at Obekai in Teso South sub county after handing over sewing machines worth four hundred thousand to Obekai traders Group, Mutua called on the affected women not to shy off when needed, “We are going to use chiefs to identify them in villages, register them and have a conversation with them on what they would like to do for income.”
Apart from helping chang’aa brewing women, the woman representative also revealed plans to empower women, youth and men’s groups in the County so that they become self-reliant, “I want by 2022 all groups in the County to be self-reliant through such projects am launching today.”
