Butula Boys were the star attraction in the Busia County Secondary Schools Sports Association (BCSSSA) Term 2A Games that ended in Busia, winning two titles to confirm their superiority. Butula, popularly known as ‘Western Hawks’ dethroned Handball champions Kolanya Boys 17-14 in the final played at St Mathias Busia Boys to register their first victory against Kolanya in the game.

Watched by their Principal Daniel Ouma, Butula also clinched the Rugby Sevens title after beating St Paul’s Amukura High School 17-12 in the finals played at St. Mary’s Mundika Boys High School.

Butula Handball Captain Jacob Wanga said they are happy to beat Kolanya for the first time in the game’s history and attributed the victory to hard work and determination.

They eliminated Sigalame in the semi-finals with SPAHS beating Nambale in the other semis. Butula qualified for the finals without playing in the semi-finals after Busende boycotted the match claiming the jury failed to bar Butula for allegedly fielding ineligible players.

The girls’ action saw two schools emerge winners for the first time in the history of the Games, sending regular participants tumbling out of the games.

Salvation Army Aboloi from Teso North defied all odds to clinch the Copa Coca-Cola under 16 soccer girls title when they beat Nasira 1-0 with Ramillah Cheboroi scoring the lone goal in the 18th minute.

St Paul’s Amukura High School won the Copa Coca-Cola under 16 soccer boys title when they beat Kamuria from Teso North 2-0. Bumala AC from Butula won the County title for the first time when they beat Bujwang’a from Sio Port 29-25.

The two teams had met in the preliminary round match which was again won by Bumala. Bishop Sulumeti Girls from Teso North were crowned the new handball champions after beating St Joseph’s Chakol 19-7 in the finals.

BCSSSA Secretary Charles Okanya said two teams in each category including two in each athletics disciplines will represent the county in the regional  Term 2A to be hosted by Busia starting Thursday.

Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega and Vihiga Counties will each send two teams for the Games whose winners will qualify for the national finals scheduled for Mombasa in the first week of June.
