The equipment for the Cassava factory at Simba Chai in Teso South Sub County has arrived in Busia and will be assembled by the end of July, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr Moses Osia has revealed.
Speaking during the occasion to distribute Agricultural Development Cheques to 45 farmers at Amukura Sports Ground presided over by Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, Dr Osia said the equipment is awaiting transportation to the site.
“Farmers will receive cassava stems to enable them to plant cassava in large numbers in order to meet the huge demand,” he said, adding that the factory will help create employment opportunities and improve the County’s economy through value addition.
The CEC member said the County Government has introduced the first cash crop in the County since independence. Over 150,000 seedlings of macadamia have been distributed to the farmers.
He said the crop will help alleviate challenges faced by farmers including school fees for their children and reduce poverty.
Dr Osia said the County Government has also scored a first by introducing fish cages, adding that there are now 120 cages in Samia and Bunyala with Beach Management Units given to manage them.
With the prevailing short rains, Osia said the County Government will distribute sorghum, millet and peas seeds to farmers ready for planting.
Osia warned Busia farmers against selling their maize at a throwaway price after realizing a bumper maize harvest this season.
”I have seen many trailers and lorries coming to Busia to buy maize from farmers at throwaway prices of Sh50 per 2kgs. In October there is fear the price of maize will skyrocket again. That is why I am warning you against selling your maize,” he said.
He said farmers in Busia also benefitted from 200,000 tissue culture bananas, subsidized fertilizers and lime which has boosted agricultural production in the County.
