CEC resigns and declares interest in Kakamega governorship

Kakamega county CEC in charge of Youths, Sports and Social Services retired Major Suleiman Sumba, has announced his resignation and interest in the gubernatorial race come 2017.

Arrogance and abuse made him resign

Sumba broke the least expected news to the press outside his office citing continued arrogance by the county government and abuse as reason behind his resignation.

According to him, the government in which he has been part of continues to intimidate Mumias residents over their parcels of land which they want to posses by force.

Sumba whose family has been caught in the Land mayhem said that the efforts by those affected to involve the court has been brushed off with goons and officers from the county government who rudely tear the court orders presented to them.

He pointed fingers at the governor Wyciffe Oparanya saying that as a leader he ought to have settled the dispute amicably.

Giving an example of Likoni where the Mombasa governor Hassan Joho intervened and his people were resettled and Kwale where governor Mvurya is working on the issue, Sumba wondered why Kakamega should be dealt with differently.

Vie for Kakamega gubernatorial seat on Jubilee ticket

Sumba further declared to run for the Kakamega county gubernatorial seat in the coming elections on a Jubilee ticket, saying this will enable him help the people facing land challenges.

“I will work with president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy because they fight for the constitution.” Said Sumba.

Life in danger over land issues

Sumba revealed that he has been threatened by a number of unknown people who demand for his head over the land issues.

He added that goons attacked his and his brothers land where crops and other things were destroyed stating that the attacks will not make him stop the fight.

Mumias residents vs government land tussle

The county government and residents of Mumias town and its outskirts are fighting over the ownership of over 480 acres of land.

The government claim that it is public land while the owners deny having sold the land to the government.

150 families have been caught in between the disputes with no where to go.

In response, Kakamega county government through its communication office wished Major Sumba well saying that it is an individual’s right to make decisions.

Meanwhile, Jubilee representatives from Kakamega county led by their chairman Desmond Shinaka received Major Sumba into the party calling upon others to make hey while the sun shines.
