The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has officially announced the appointment of Charles Mutuma as the Commander of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU). This confirmation comes shortly after the Ministry declared the new police unit fully operational, following its launch in January 2025.
The establishment of NGAPU marks a significant step in bolstering community safety and security across the nation. During the unit’s launch earlier this year, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that the government had already assigned 6,000 police officers to NGAPU. This deployment roughly translates to two officers dedicated to each of the country’s 3,950 chiefs. Additionally, there are 9,043 assistant chiefs who will also benefit from the support of this new unit.
NGAPU’s mandate is comprehensive, aiming to tackle a range of pressing issues at the local level. The unit is specifically tasked with addressing the growing threat of local criminal gangs, combating the prevalence of gender-based violence, and curbing the distribution of illicit alcohol and drugs. Furthermore, NGAPU officers will be equipped to provide crucial assistance in high-risk security operations when required.
The appointment of Commander Charles Mutuma is expected to provide strong leadership and direction to this vital new arm of the National Police Service. With its dedicated personnel and clear objectives, NGAPU is poised to play a critical role in enhancing the safety and well-being of communities throughout Kenya.
