Hundreds of boda boda riders from Chekalini ward in Lugari sub county disrupted transport activities along Chekalini stage-Arch Bishop Njenga road as they held demonstrations and planted banana stems and tree seedlings on the road protesting its bad state.
They said transport along the road has become impossible due to its impassable state, and said they have witnessed many accidents along the road.
“As we speak now two of our colleagues are walking on crutches and there’s a woman nursing injuries after fracturing her hand in an accident that occurred on this road,” they lamented.
The angry operators said their business has been deleteriously affected by the state of the road arguing that most of their customers now fear travelling along the route on motorbikes as they may end up being involved in accidents.
The operators planted banana stalks on the road disrupting both motor and human traffic by digging a huge trench across the road.
They said that despite presenting their grievances to area leaders, no step has been taken forcing them to resort to demonstrations as the only way to pass their grievances.
“We have chosen to dig this trench and plant banana stems so that we can be heard, we have tried to raise complaints to our leaders in vain and they have always been delaying the renovation of this road,” they said.
Efforts by Chekalini ward Member of County Assembly Kenneth Indusa to hire youths to refill the trench were futile as he was chased away by the angry boda boda operators who demanded grading and gravelling of the entire road.
