Residents of Chekalini ward in Lugari sub county may soon start to enjoy clean water supply for their domestic use from the Brow dam located within the ward.
According to the sub county Water and environment officer Mr. Elijah Omenda the project targets over 10,000 residents in Musembe and Koromait sub locations and that it will also be expanded to serve all surrounding schools and other public institutions within the ward
He said after the national government rehabilitated the dam in 2017, the County government of Kakamega has intervened to ensure residents benefit from its water.
He disclosed that already the County government had allocated over Kshs 88 million towards the project
Already, he said his department had commenced preliminary sensitization exercises before the laying down of pipes aimed at supplying the commodity.
He urged the residents to embrace the project and allow pipes to pass through their farms for the success of the project. “I know the pipes will pass on boundaries of our farms and in some areas they will cut through our shambas, let us just accept the project to go on and benefit our people,” said Omenda.
Furthermore, he asked donors who are helping in water projects in the area to work in liaison with his office for quality work.
He regretted that some of donors had started projects especially drilling of borehole without following required procedure and have ended up leaving the work incomplete.
At the same time Omenda revealed that there was a bill before the County assembly seeking the formation of a Rural water company which will help in management of all community water projects within the county
