Tourists from North Rift region and other parts of the country have been asked to keep off Chepkiit waterfalls scenery until the rains reduce due to its dangers of posing a threat to lives as it is more dangerous during the periods of heavy rain falls.
This is according to the directive from the Ministry of Tourism, Nandi to have the visits to the site withheld until further notice when the rains reduce as it pose a great risk of lives due to very slippery rocks and strong water waves.
The government is warning anyone visiting the area to visit at his or her own risk as it is more dangerous during this period of heavy rains.
Many lives have been lost in the region due to the circumstances surrounding the scenery which is not fenced off and the tendency to move from one side to another to get a better view of the place have increased chances of slipperiness leading to sliding deaths.
Residents of the area have raised a great concern to the county government of Nandi which to date has not even taken any stringent measures to guide the waterfalls which has continued claiming many lives, the recent incident being the death of a lady from Elgeyo Marakwet county who was trying to pose for a selfie photo then she slid and fell in the waterfalls.
They argued that on an average the waterfalls claim at least two lives annually a situation which is wanting and people should be extra careful or be on the lookout when in this beautiful scenery but dangerous place to avoid loss of lives.
Chepkiit in Kalenjiin term means to view from afar which is not just a name but a thorough warning on how dangerous the falls and its rocky surfaces can be especially during the heavy pounding rainfalls which floods the area.
