Residents of Chepkoya village in Kaptama ward of Mt Elgon constituency are a dissatisfied lot after a contractor who was awarded a tender to construct the Kongit –Chepkoya road abandoned it before finishing its rehabilitation.
In an exclusive interview with West Media, the residents led by former Mount Elgon County council chairman Amos Tulgon, the residents expressed their anger over the abandoned road projects saying it is a failure by their elected leaders.
He added that the contractor had felled many trees and destroyed other property belonging to the residents, saying it is unfortunate that they are now suffering a double loss as the means of transport to their various destinations has been strained.
Mr Tulgon said the only means they are relying on currently is the use of donkeys, saying it has been a challenge especially to expectant mothers in Chepkoya who have to be taken to hospital urgently to deliver saying some of them have ended up losing their lives.
He asserted that they will not allow the contractor to take away a caterpillar he abandoned at the site before leaving saying the road needs to be well constructed as it is an issue to them especially during this rainy season.
His sentiments were echoed by another resident who said many of them are farmers and they need to transport their produce to the market on a daily basis saying a poor road network has been their greatest challenge and they have incurred a lot of losses.
He added that they are considering shifting their political allegiance from the Jubilee government, led by Bungoma County Governor Ken Lusaka in the region.
Some of the women from the village also expressed their anger saying they are forced to wash their children’s uniforms on a daily basis since their children pass through the muddy roads to the school and back.
