A man was brutally assaulted to death by villagers for stealing a hen at Esirabe Village in Emuhaya, Vihiga County. The area Police Boss Mrs. Beatrice Gachago, confirmed that the deceased, Harun Aluche, succumbed to heavy beatings on Tuesday evening while at his uncle’s home.
According to police records, the deceased was accused of selling a stolen to Mrs. Margaret Asiele’s. “It is claimed the stolen chicken belonged to Mr. Omulunda
Esikhuri,” said Gachago.
Mrs Asiele confirmed she had bought the hen from Aluche, in morning of the
same day, prompting enraged villagers to flush him out of the uncle’s house before beating him to death using crude weapons.
Police officers removed the body to the Kisumu hospital mortuary where
it was set to undergo autopsy.
Commenting on the incident, the County police boss appealed to County
residents to refrain from taking the law into their hands whenever dealing with suspects. “We urge residents to instead work closely with security organs, including agents of nyumba kumi, village elders, chiefs and assistant chiefs,” advised Gachago.
Assistant Chief Mr. Joseph Kweya described the deceased as a seasoned criminal who had specialized in petty theft.
Kweya said the deceased, brandishing a sharp sword, had threatened to
cause harm on his assailants who, however, overpowered and killed him. “Prior to stealing Esikhuri’s chicken on Tuesday, it was alleged he had stolen about four chickens belonging to a close neighbor before he sold them to unknown destination the previous day,” claimed the chief.
