A Child Protection unit has been established in West Pokot County Courtesy of the World Vision Kenya NGO, The Police Department, Department of Children Services and the County government to provide a child friendly environment to those children in conflict and in conflict with the law.
Speaking at Kapenguria Police headquarters during the official opening of the facility, World Vision Regional Manager Catherine Timbomei who was represented by Mr. Festus Chirchir said that Children in conflict with the law will be separated from those adult criminals awaiting the determination of their cases.
She said World Vision Organization has used 5.3 million shillings to set up the facility. “The Police department gave us land and some construction materials. We want to create a safe environment for children,” said Tembomei.
West Pokot Children Social Protection officer Mr. Patrick Mugun said that children need safer access and better lives. He said that children cases will be handled at the facility .
West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said that there is a need for children to go to school. Apollo asked area members of parliament to improve infrastructure in schools. “Development projects are being undertaken by the County Governments.”
Area Governor John Lonyangapuo who was the chief guest said the children will be taught at the facility.
He lauded the partnership with NGOs and the Police department saying that the opening of the unit is a major milestone in protecting children who are the future of the country.
West Pokot First lady Dr. Mary Lonyangapuo said there is the need to protect children, and asked members of County Assembly to pass the child protection bill. “It is important to have a place to keep our children in case they have done a mistake. When they are mixed with elders in police cells they becomes worse.”
