Over 12, 000 orphaned and vulnerable children from Lugari Sub County benefitted after receiving pairs of shoes donated by the Nucleus Children’s Trust. Speaking at the NGO’s office situated at Kaburengu in Matete, the Director Mr. John Tharuba Kariuki said a total of 12,360 children from both Matete and Lugari had received TOMS shoes from his
Organization.
Kariuki stated that the objective of donating the shoes was to save the children from environmental related disease infections. “I am depressed by the huge number of OVCs who carry out their duties bar in this Sub County,” he observed, adding that his
organization would ensure that such children received shoes.
Kariuki commended USAID for continuing to fund his organization which he said had made it possible to assist the disadvantaged in the community.
Besides donating shoes, he said the organization had sponsored the building of houses for the caregivers who were living in deplorable conditions.
“After discovering that some of these children and their caregivers were staying in deplorable conditions following a visit we decided to build for them semi-permanent houses”, said Kariuki adding that a majority of them stayed under leaking roofs.
He said his organization had so far managed to construct semi-permanent houses for about 38 caregivers and called on the OVC’s care providers to ensure that the beneficiaries fully enjoyed the facilities warning that those who will be discovered to be diverting them for their own use will be punished.
Besides, he said his organization had also managed this year to avail bursaries amounting to over sh 1.4 million to 141 students in secondary schools.
