City Harvest church in Webuye town has started a four day youth conference that’s geared to sensitizing youths against the use of drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and career choices.
Addressing the media, the church Bishop, Emmanuel Wakhungila said it’s the norm of the church to have youth conference every holiday that brings all the youth of all ages of the church and other churches to give them direction considering that most of them are going through hard times coping up with challenges that they undergo while in school and at home.
Bishop Wakhungila said many youths engage in drug abuse due to influence from peer pressure and therefore they need direction all the time in order to differentiate what’s good and bad adding that some parents have absconded from their duties, leaving them to teachers and church leadership.
” We ought not to be close to our children as parents but as churches we try not only listen to them but hear and learn from them especially the challenges they go through, find ways of solving the issues and putting in mind that times have changed too and the advice should go hand in hand with the current times, “said Bishop Wakhungila.
He also said teenage pregnancies in Bungoma County are increasing time and again and said it’s important for all stakeholders to work together and find a lasting solution and one way is such conferences as he appealed to all churches to emulate the same.
Bishop also encouraged youths to make good career choices while in colleges and universities and stop going for cheap courses but emulate their fellows who go for courses like engineering, medicine among others and applauded the leaders from regions where students choose such courses for offering mentorship programs to youths before joining colleges and universities.
Youths who are attending the conference among them; Charity Imani and Tony Makokha applauded the efforts of the church by giving them a platform to explain and share life experiences and get pieces of advice from the church leadership.
