Chief Justice David Maraga has once again decried the budgetary allocation to the judiciary, saying the importance of the judiciary in the country shouldn’t be understated. Speaking at the Annual Judges Colloquium in Mombasa, CJ Maraga said it was shocking that the judicial service commission was given Kshs 50 million only, to cater for many costs including repair charges. “I have received complaints that some of you haven’t received even cars since your appointment, and some have old cars that are breaking down all the time,” he said.
He said when the judiciary budget was being drafted, they came up with around Kshs 31 billion, “Sometimes we ask ourselves quite a number of questions and wonder whether some people in the country realize the importance of the judiciary. I say that because the judiciary in any country plays a key role in security and the economic prosperity of the nation,” said CJ Maraga.
He noted that they aren’t asking for equal budgetary allocations to ministries like Education, Health ministries that require a hefty allocation, “They should know the importance of the judiciary and allocate us the resources we require. We are taking up the matter and I believe we are going to resolve the issue,” he said, adding that he is convinced the concerned authorities will respond positively and avail the fundamental funding.
