The Council of Governors has urged the Senate to conduct Senate sessions with Governors on a virtual platform and avoid physical appearances. Addressing the press in Kakamega, the Council of Governors Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya said that in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Senate should consider having virtual sessions with all Governors who are supposed to appear before it and especially those that are above 58 years.
Oparanya said as much as the Senate would wish to get some clarification on some financial issues in Counties, physical appearances of Governors will put them at a high risk of contracting the Coronavirus. The CoG also called on all politicians to minimise their political gatherings as required by the Ministry of Health.
The chair said that so far, the political wing has been the weakest link in the fight against the pandemic and therefore they should consider obeying the safety measures as outlined by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The CoG also observed that delayed disbursements of equitable share revenue to Counties will not only affect the payment of salaries of workers in the Counties, but will also hamper the fight against Covid-19.
