Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has revealed that committees will be set up in Bungoma at the County level, sub county level and ward level, “To engage the people of Bungoma County on this process of the BBI.” Speaking in Nalondo, the Governor said he is ready to step up and champion for the BBI report, adidng that all that is remaining is the process of collecting signatures towards a referendum to begin. His comments come days after President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister postponed the launch of the signatures collection drive.
Wangamati added that Governors submitted their grievances and concerns about the report to the President and former PM after they met in Naivasha, and lauded its content, “We believe that having done that, 80% and 90% of the report is good, We are now asking the two principles that once they are done with the amendments they should allow Kenyans to have a conversation and start the process of collecting signatures.”
The discourse is still eliciting mixed reactions, with a section of leaders calling on the government to set its focus on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic instead. There have also bene calls to amend sections of the report, in order to factor in the needs of all Kenyans. However, BBI proponents have maintained that the window for suggestions was open for long and now all that’s remaining is a referendum.
