West Media Ltd wishes to congratulate all those elected by the electorate of the Counties of Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet as Senators, Governors, Members of the National Assembly as Members representing Constituencies and Women Representatives and Members of County Assemblies.
The people of those Counties have placed on your shoulders the greatest trust under Article 1(2) of the Constitution that you may exercise as their representatives, the people’s sovereign power.
The trust bestowed by the people on yourselves is enormous and is for a limited period of five years up to 7th August 2022. You have made promises to the people but the time to deliver on those promises is just that five years.
The scorecard on whether you will deliver your promises is blank now but the clock is ticking away. We trust you will keep your promises to serve the people who elected you, the people who reside in the electoral constituencies you represent be it the County, the Constituency or the Ward.
At the heart of all governance is the people you represent. If you represent them well, the transformation will be visible for all to see. If you represent yourselves instead of the people, it will all be there to be seen in the short five years that lie ahead as you will personally prosper with your cronies and your people will continue to be mired in disease, ignorance, and poverty.
For the electorate, the hard part of the governance conundrum is just beginning, that of holding your elected leaders to the leash, to their promises and so that they serve you instead of serving themselves. It is eternal vigilance and demand for utmost accountability on your elected leaders that will translate the electoral cycle of every five years into a fruitful ritual. Not to demand accountability of your elected leaders after electing them is to subvert democracy.
We trust the greed exhibited by the elected leaders of the last elective cycle of pampering themselves with fraudulent benefits, in unlimited allowances, salary increases, this and that perk will not recur this time round.
The gusto exhibited by the elected leaders in the electoral campaigns must be applied to designing solutions that work to salvage the majority of residents from the affrications of ignorance, disease, and poverty. Congratulations once again but do not betray the electorate as God is watching all of you.
