CORD condemned for saying IEBC rejected Okoa Kenya
The Coalition for Democracy and Development has been criticized for blaming Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for colluding with Jubilee to reject Okoa Kenya Initiative.
Uasin Gishu county speaker Isaac Terer has rubbished CORD for blaming the government for colliding with IEBC to dismiss their Initiative.
Mr. Terer said such claims were baseless and were meant to tarnish IEBC’s reputation ahead of the August 2017 general election.
He said IEBC had a duty to verify the signatures presented to them before making a decision as to whether the Okoa Kenya initiative had attained set legal requirements.
“CORD had a duty to collect the one million required signatures but the IEBC had to verify that
IEBC on Tuesday announced the collapse of the Okoa Kenya referendum push after the presented signatures failed to reach the required one million.
Cord has since claimed that IEBC colluded with the government to end their bid to have a constitution amended.
Following the collapse of the opposition’s bid to amend the constitution through the Okoa Kenya Initiative, Mr. Terer urged CORD leadership to consider having their referendum questions included in the August 2017 general elections.
This is in what, he said, will ensure less public resources are used noting that it would be costly for the country to have a referendum just a few months before the general elections.
The speaker said if the opposition has a heart for this nation they will seek to have the referendum joined together with the general election to save on the expenses
“The country needs a lot of money funds to finance development project and it would not be a good idea to have a referendum just months before the general because it will be costly,” added the speaker.
