The Council of Governors has scheduled talks with the Senate on Tuesday to discuss issues raised by the health care workers in an effort to resolve the ongoing strike. This has been revealed by CoG chaiperson Wycliffe Oparanya who has called upon the health workers to embrace dialogue in order to resolve their grievances.
He said the Country is facing harsh economic challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and pleaded with the healthcare workers to understand the situation. “The Covid-19 pandemic has crippled the economy of our country and I urge healthcare workers to be understanding and continue offering their services,” said Governor Oparanya.
“It is a new normal for all Kenyans and it is a rare time for the country trying to fight Covid-19 and we appreciate the efforts being made by the healthcare workers in this fight. I request them not to go on strike instead they give room for negotiations to get a lasting solution,” he said.
While doctors under KMPDU suspended their strike at the eleventh hour for 21 days, nurses under KNUN and clinical officers under KUCO proceeded with their strike on Monday. The health workers have called attention to several grievances including a lac of PPEs and compensation. The Union officials have urged their members to maintain their stand, with services in several health centres across the country already affected.
