Students of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology who were expelled have suffered a blow after the Court revoked their request to have the expulsion terminated.
22 students, 11 who were expelled directly and the other handed lengthy suspensions, had moved to Court seeking its intervention after being accused of involvement in the chaos that rocked the institution that led to its closure a few months ago.
Of the 22 students, 11 had suffered direct expulsion for spearheading the riots and damage of property. The decision was arrived at by the University Senate after close scrutiny of the recommendations by the welfare and disciplinary committee.
During the ruling, Justice William Musyoka indicated that the application did not exclude the students having participated in the riot and destruction of property.
He further said that despite students claim that their rights were being violated it still doesn’t exclude them from having participated in riots and property destruction.
The lawyer representing the students Mr. Colins Liyayi vowed to challenge the decision by Justice Musyoka. The student president Vincent Lumala is one of the expelled students. The other 11 students have been suspended for two academics years.
