Kenya has once again recorded a new high with Coronavirus cases, after 796 people tested positive within a day out of a sample size of 6754. The high numbers takes the total cases to 15,601. This presents a continuing sharp increase within the past week. The cumulative samples tested stand at 261,027. Of the new cases, all are Kenyans except 3. 503 are males while 293 are females.
The youngest is 1 year old and the oldest is 87 years old. 378 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, 199 on home based care and 179 from various hospitals. However, 3 patients have succumbed, with fatalities now at 263. Speaking at Afya House on Thursday, Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the government isn’t overwhelmed yet and the heath systems is still stable, despite the sharp increase in cases, “In terms of triggers we put in place, the alert systems, we are in control of the situation.”
She said it takes a lot before one can declare they are overwhelmed, “We are observing and surveying the situation as it evolves.” She added that the government is scaling up its communication on Covid-19 to Kenyans, taking up a more community based, person to person route. Sh said officials will be visiting public places like supermarkets and markets to engage Kenyans, adding that an approach to communication similar to the one used to pass information on HIV/AIDs will be used.
