The Trans Nzoia County government has refuted claims doing rounds on social media that the first patient diagnosed with the Coronavirus visited Kitale before going back to Ongata Rongai, and warned those spreading rumors of dire consequences.
Speaking on Monday in Kitale while giving a comprehensive report concerning the
County’s preparedness to combat the Coronavirus, Trans Nzoia West County commissioner Abdullahi Khalifa together with Trans Nzoia County Governor
Patrick Khaemba claimed the rumours on social media were aimed at instilling fear among residents, “We shall not allow unpalatable, unsubstantiated news aimed at spreading
fear among our residents concerning the Coronavirus to continue while the
perpetrators are left scot free. If you want to face a full edge of the
law, continue spreading lies and this time we shall come after you,” said Khalifa.
The County Government also has established Coronavirus isolation centres at Kaisagat health center in Cherangany Sub County and another one at Kitale hospital.
The two leaders have banned all operations at night clubs and urged residents to avoid handshakes, congregations including funerals as well as observing general cleanliness, and also urged matatu operators to provide sanitizers for travellers.
The County commissioner added that they are closely monitoring operations at the Kenya -Uganda border at the Suam entry point, given that there are shortcut routes used by people from both Kenya and Uganda.
