Police spokesman Charles Owino has said the suspected Al Shabaab militants who kidnapped Cuban doctors in Mandera on Friday are being pursued in a joint security agencies effort. The two doctors are part of the group of Cuban medics who were brought to the country in a health cooperation initiative between the two nations. Speaking to the press at Jogoo House, Owino recounted the events, that the doctors were under police escort when they were leaving their residence, heading to the Mandera hospital in a County hospital vehicle.
They were escorted by two officers, one form the Administration Police and another from the Kenya Police Service, “Along the way they were blocked by two probox cars. Unfortunately, the AP was shot and fatally wounded.” He said the car and occupants were driven to Somalia. The County vehicle was recovered and the driver was taken in for questioning. He affirmed that all security agencies have been mobilized in the operation.
