Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has appealed to locals in Trans Nzoia County to plant trees in the County.
Speaking at Kimothon Endebess when he led residents of Trans Nzoia in tree planting exercise, Machogu noted that drastic environmental challenges emanating from hunger, continued drought, inefficient rainfall was man-made that’s caused by human activities whose process was cutting trees.
Machogu appealed to all the households to plant trees stating that forest cover in the country was 12percent and Trans Nzoia County has 15 percent and the target for the nation was 30 percent
He explained the role trees play in beautification of the environment as well as provision of clean water for the residents calling upon all leaders to protect and preserve trees to survive.
On his part, Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya stated that his government will plant 11 million trees per year to help in forest cover.
He however appealed to the forest rangers to apply their work with humanity and avoid harassing locals bordering forests that are at times found in forests.
He blamed rangers whom he claimed have owned forests and left locals in the cold as they don’t have ownership of the said forest.
Natembeya however appealed to locals to avoid pressure of cutting trees but instead called upon them to plant more trees that will aid them in environmental conservation.
