Education CS Prof. George Magoha has affirmed that all students and pupils will have masks once school reopen on Monday. Speaking on Sunday, CS Magoha said parents have been notified in advance that each child needs at least two reusable masks and for those who can’t afford masks, they’ll be made available.
However, he said achieving social distancing in schools will be a problem, but that can’t stop schools from reopening. He said teachers should be innovative and use any available space to accommodate the students, including using dining halls, assembly halls as classrooms.
He said the idea of learning under trees is good and doing so is healthy, “Don’t criminalize the thought of having children learn from outside.” He said the fact that he suggested learning under trees shouldn’t be taken to mean that the government won’t construct classrooms.
He further warned parents who are able to pay school fees not to take advantage of the government’s directive that children shouldn’t be sent home due to fee arrears. He noted that teachers should be keen to identify the students who are from poor backgrounds and those who aren’t, so that those who qualify for help can be kept in school.
“Children in boarding schools are expected to eat, that child has been eating in your house and you are taking the child to school and expecting the teacher to feed the child, with what?” he posed.
