Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has said a security operation will be in place in Matungu until suspected gang members who have been terrorizing residents are apprehended. Speaking in Matungu, Kakamega County, where he visited after a prolonged period of insecurity, CS Matiang’i said the operation which has already been established, will include GSU officers. The area has witnessed a spate of attacks that have left at least 15 dead in the past month. The attacks were gang related, and the reason for them is still unknown.

He said the mandate of the government is to ensure Kenyans live in peace, “As the government we can’t allow Kenyans to be arrested and terrorized by gangs.” He said some suspects have already been arrested, including one mastermind who had already been convicted for twenty years but had escaped, and who police believe was leading the cartel from Nairobi. He added that the remaining suspects should surrender to the police because the officers will still ensure they find them.

Giving in to calls by area leaders and residents, CS Matiang’i said security officers will be shuffled and security leaders who will cooperate with the residents will be brought in, “We want to look for the suspects so that we find them and take action.” The CS said he has held several meetings with leaders from the area concerning the security situation.
