Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said government departments and institutions should make all their uniforms in Kenya, in order to save taxpayers’ money and promote the local manufacturing industry. Speaking at the NYS camp where the new police uniforms are being made, CS Matiang’i said the government is saving as much as Kshs 700 million by making the uniforms locally. “The capacity is clear. Let us support our economy, let us support our manufacturers, our farmers…it’s absolute foolsihness to spend our resources to import things we can find here,” he said.

He said the government is the greatest consumer of goods and services, and that the money sued for goods and services belongs to taxpayers, “Isn’t it wise to support the Kenyan taxpayers by supporting local content?” he posed, “We are asking every government department that makes uniforms to make them locally.”

He added that manufacturing can’t be supported theoretically, but practically, “By spending our tax resources sensibly by buying what we can make locally because that’s how we create jobs, that’s how we support our farmers, that’show we grow the economy and that’s what any responsible citizen of our country is expected to do.” Currently, 1,000 pairs of uniforms are being produced per day at the NYS centre, and Matiang’i revelaed the uniforms are ready.
