A 21-year-old boda boda operator from Webuye SA in Webuye has been arrested by police for defiling a minor. Speaking to the press, area chief Misiko Barasa said the girl had been sent by her parents to sell bananas at Webuye market, and after she had finished the errand she met the boda boda operator, Dominic Simiyu, who persuaded her to accompany him to his home, and they spent the whole night at his house. But in the morning, some concerned villagers who noted she was a schoolgirl locked the house door form outside and informed the authorities.
Misiko faulted parents who send school children for business errands when they are supposed to be in school, even after the introduction of free compulsory primary education. He warned that the parents of any child who’ll be found selling bananas, guavas, and oranges at the market centres will be apprehended and taken to court. He added that parents send their children, especially girls, on late time errands, including going to the posho mills, or roasting maize at market centres and defilement cases occur as a result. He said Simiyu, who will be taken to court, will serve as an example to other defilement culprits, as the victim undergoes medical tests to ascertain if she was infected with any sexual diseases.
