The Government through the Ministry of Education is in the process to reform the entire education curriculum in order to embrace a more practical curriculum.
The curriculum will engage more in thematic approaches through ideas in core subjects and cut down on large content for students.
Kenyan curriculum was last reformed in the year 1984 and therefore data collection and consultancy is expected to begin its actual work.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Mataiang’i says the steering committee to begin the work to revise the curriculum will be named on Monday next week.
Deputy president William Ruto has emphasized on the need to reshape the education sector so as to balance between arts, sciences and practicals for all students.
Ruto was speaking on Wednesday in Nairobi during the National Conference on Curriculum Reform, citing that education is a powerful tool for development of the nation and therefore it is necessary to have a curriculum that competes with other Countries for instance Korea, the United States among others.
“The reform process will give better results and will impact on the mental cut of the nation and productivity, and children will be capable of consuming world class education”, said Deputy President.
The DP mentioned that most successful societies across the world have good education systems and therefore curriculum reform is a way to achieve social re-engineering in order to give special attention to the diversity of learners.
“We want to create a generation with entrepreneurial skills through a curriculum that instills values to sustain democracy and prosperity”, Ruto added.
The new curriculum will ensure that learners use ICT to grasp digital content for interactive learning and will entail educational research for more comprehensive skills.
So far 7.2 % of the G.D.P has been set for the education sector to foster the new curriculum.
The key areas that will be involved in the reformed curriculum are global warming, business and investment, health and civil education. All this will be steered by literacy and communication, critical thinking and problem solving.
