Following the increased cases of defilement in Trans Nzoia County, several human rights organizations are up in arms calling for immediate action to be taken in order to curb the rising cases. Human rights activists Immaculate Shamalla together with Boniface Wanyoike condemned bitterly the rising cases of defilement within Trans Nzoia County urging all the residents to help address the cases which have gone a notch higher. They criticized the way parents of the affected families have been handling the defilement cases, claiming most parents have fallen prey to enticements from alleged perpetrators.
The activists were reacting to a case where a defiler, Ndiwa Muneria, is alleged to have defiled a minor of fourteen years in Form one and impregnated her causing her to drop from school because of the pregnancy. According to the family, the accused visited the home of the victim with enticements in order to interfere with the transparency of the family’s witnessing.
According to the uncle of the affected child, they discussed together with the father of the minor on the modalities of how the case affecting the accused can be settled out of court and the cash payment of about Kshs. 600,000, plus half an acre of land to the affected family.
Milimani location Chief Sylvester Momanyi confirmed information about the attempted interference by the accused.
He said the suspect is trying to make sure that the case flops so that he can get off scot-free, and that he is trying to use the wealth he has to achieve that. The chief, however, advised parents to stay together and offer parental guidance to their children. He used the example of the defiled minor, saying that her parents had separated and the minor was staying alone with the father, in a situation, he termed as unpalatable as fathers cannot offer correct sex education to their daughters. Chief Momanyi said cases of defilements are on the rise and warned that action will be taken to curb the menace, given that it may adversely affect the next generation. He added that perpetrators must face stiffer penalties in order to serve as examples to others.
