Kimilili parliamentary aspirant on a Jubilee ticket Didmus Wekesa Barasa has claimed his life is in danger after some unknown suspected arsonists sneaked into his compound smashed the windscreen of his car and attempted to torch it on Sunday night.
In an exclusive interview, Didmus said after his daily campaign errands he was chauffeured to a hotel where he was meant to spend the night. His campaign team went to his residential home, where the car was parked, and they woke up in the morning to find the windscreen smashed.
He said the suspected arsonists used a ladder to sneak over the fence. A bottle of petrol and a matchbox were found near the car. “I had four hundred and twenty thousand shillings in the car together with my laptop which they managed to get away with and it is fortunate that they did not manage to burn the car because the fire could’ve caused massive damage even to my house,” he said.
He attributed the incident to his political competitors saying they’ve panicked due to his popularity and wanted to weaken his mobility by targeting his car, adding that he won’t be intimidated by the incident.
He also blamed security agents for laxity in their work saying they ought to be aggressive to arrest people who are involved in such heinous acts, “I’ll be forced to form my own security group who will protect me because it’s now evident that people are after me as we near the general election,” he said.
Kamukuywa MCA Moses Opicho also condemned the incident saying the people were aiming to paralyze the campaigns of Didmus Wekesa.
He called upon the County Government together with the National Government to stabilize security especially for aspirants across all parties, adding that those who are popular may be targeted by kidnappers.
The incident was confirmed by Kimilili Deputy County Commissioner Reuben Loyotoman who said the police have launched investigations to bring to book the perpetratous of the crime.
