A dormitory at St. Joseph’s girls’ secondary school in Chesumei constituency, Nandi County was gutted by fire on Monday night when students had gone for their evening studies. Confirming the incident, Nandi Central police boss Mr. Stephen Obara said the fire started around 7 pm and nothing could be salvaged from the dormitory.
Obara said no students were injured during the incident, but a resident who had offered assistance to put out the fire was injured and he is recuperating at Kapsabet referral hospital. The Nandi police boss said the cause of the fire is yet to be established but an investigation has been launched.
The school’s board of management met with other officials to assess the extent of the damage and if there is a strategy of compensation and restoring normalcy in the school. The incidences of fire tragedies in schools have become rampant and there have been calls from some quarters to have CCTVs installed in schools to keep a close eye on proceedings. Last week KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion urged students to look for another avenue to air their grievances, including using picketing as an option.
