A 31-year-old man from Kiwanja Ndege village in Lugari Sub County is nursing serious burns after his mother poured hot water on him.
Speaking to West Media, Mr. Charles Lumula narrated circumstances leading to the incident. He said they were in the kitchen with his young sister at about 7:30pm preparing supper before they differed after the sister refused to switch on the light and he slapped her before she ran out screaming, attracting the attention of their mother who was in the main house.
“I asked my sister to allow me prepare ugali but she said she will cook and requested me to assist her to cut the sukuma wiki. When I told her to switch on the light she refused and instead started dancing along to loud music that was playing, I got annoyed and slapped her. She ran out crying, attracting our mother’s attention,” explained Lumula.
He said their drunkard mother Doris Khati Musumari angrily entered the kitchen and without enquiring what had transpired between them, she removed a sufuria of boiling water from the fire and poured on him
burning him on the back and chest.
“In fact her intention was to pour it on my face but when I jumped to try and run away she poured it on my back. I didn’t know my mother was that serious to do this to me,” said Lumula.
Lumula who is the only son in a family of six says this was not the first time the mother assaulted him disclosing that she once injured him using a machete and she has even threatened to poison him. “I am the only surviving son in this family. We were born two boys and five girls, but my young brother committed suicide following constant mistreatment from our mother. I don’t know why she hates her sons to
this extent,” he said.
Despite sustaining close to 20 percent burns in the Saturday evening incident, Lumula has not received any medical attention. “Nobody cares about me and I have no money to go to hospital. My mother together with my sisters are less concerned,” said Lumula, who appealed for help from any good samaritan.
He revealed that he has tried to marry three times but his mother chased away the ladies and she has warned him never to marry again.
He said her mother’s uncontrollable behavior has forced their father, who works in Nairobi (name undisclosed) to stay away from the family.
The incident has been strongly condemned by neighbours, who accused Musumari of irresponsibility and being a nuisance in the society.
They alleged that when drunk she always misbehaves with young boys in the village and despite the local administration in the area warning her she has given them a deaf ear.
They said sometimes when drunk she sleeps on the road or terraces and it’s the son who has been going for her rescue and carry her home. They are now appealing for a legal action to be taken against her.
