EACC has confirmed that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested while escaping a roadblcok in Voi. The arrest came moments after the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji ordered the arrest, citing the Governor’s involvement in graft while in office and loss of money amounting to Kshs 357 million. However, it was not plain sailing for the detectives who were dispatched to arrest Sonko, as a scuffle ensued at Ikanga airstrip in Voi due to his reluctance to board a police chopper to Nairobi on Friday afternoon.
In a short viral video, the Governor is seen tussling with police officers, signifying trying to avoid arrest. All was calm moments later as he was whisked away to a chopper, hands cuffed and flown to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. He was then ferried to the EACC headquarters under tight security and later taken to Milimani Law Courts.
He was denied anticipatory bail by the judge and is set to spend the weekend in police custody. Sonko’s lawyer Cecil Miller said the Governor be granted bail as he does not pose a flight risk. He also filed an application relating to EACC integrity issues and its investigations director Abdi Mohamed which will be heard on Monday. DPP Haji said there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the Governor and the other accused persons.
