Kimilili Boys and Moi Girls High School Kamusinga are the new East Africa School Games (EASS) handball boys and girls champions. Kimilili edged out rivals St.Peters Chesirkiwa in an entertaining final at Eldoret Sports Club while Kamusinga beat Uganda’s Mbogo to claim the crown.
The 8 times national champions Kimilili played in their own class defeating their opponents 30-20 to scoop the title without losing a single match in their group stages. Kimilili eliminated defending champions ES Kigoma of Rwanda 28-18 in the semi-final while St.Peters beat Kibuli from Uganda to sail through to the finals.
Kimilili Coach Gerald Juma termed the victory a milestone since it was their maiden win in the regional games, St. Peters finished second for the second time after coming behind ES Kigoma in Rwanda last year.
In the girls’ category Kamusinga registered 26-16 win against Mbogo. Elsewhere Twelve times national schools hockey champions Friends school Kamusinga secured their fifth Regional title after winning the 2016 edition.
Kamusinga reclaimed the title they last won in 2014 by finishing at the summit of the regional league table with 11 points, just one ahead of close rivals St. Anthony’s from Kitale who finished in the second spot with 10 points. Kakamega High School and St.Peters High School Mumias won the 15’s and 7’s titles.
And as this games come to a conclusion the venues for next year’s national and East Africa games have been released. Nyeri town and Tanzania will be the hosts for the upcoming Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national finals and the East Africa Secondary School games respectively.
Metropolitan region will be the hosts for Term One games, Mombasa for Term Two with Nyeri hosting the term three ball games. For East Africa, probably Tanzania or Burundi depending on how the situation will be, one of the countries will host the regional competition.
