All is set for the elevation of Eldoret town into a city status on Thursday 15th August 2024. President Dr. William Ruto is expected to attend the much awaited function in the town of champions that will soon change into the City of Champions.
At the moment, the country has got four cities namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu. Eldoret town will raise the number of Kenyan cities to five after the Eldoret town elevation function tomorrow.
The conferment ceremony was expected to be done Thursday 8th August but Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii said that changes were made to align the ceremony with the winners’ gala of the Kenya Music Festivals hosted at the Moi Girls High School.
The President is also expected to be the chief Guest at the presidential music gala at state lodge Eldoret on Friday. Winners of different categories in this year’s musical festivals are set to entertain the President.
What comes with the elevation of Eldoret town to city status?
The conferment of city status will make the municipality more visible for corporates, which may see a rise in population from job-seekers and smallholder businesses.
The county adopted a logo, formerly used by the Municipality of Eldoret since 1964, which was designed by white settler Derric Stab.
There has been a raging debate in the town over the logo, with some residents rejecting it arguing it has questionable features that go against their religious beliefs.
The logo’s main colour is green and has features including a rising sun, a cow, a maize cob, a ribbon, a nubian giraffe, ploughed land and maize leaves.
