Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa is set to be released on a Kshs 1 million bail by a Nairobi Court, however, he will remain in remand until Monday when police will have completed investigations. The former CS was arrested by DCI officers and taken in for grilling on Thursday in connection with a Kshs 40 billion fraudulent weapons deal.
He was arraigned at JKIA court on Friday to face the charges, together with three accomplices. The prosecution had asked for more time to conclude investigations on certain documents they had allegedly recovered from his vehicle connected to the fake deal, but Echesa’s lawyers argued against the claim that he had forged documents of the arms deal, saying the planned investigation doesn’t warrant his detention. “A minor offence of making a document cannot call for the detention of the first respondent,” argued Echesa’s lawyer.
Echesa’s arrest comes months after he was once again in the spotlight after he was taken in during the killings that happened at Matungu, in Kakamega County. He was released after questioning due to lack of evidence.
