A family in Kapchilla Village, Siyoi Ward, West Pokot County is appealing for well-wishers to help them cater for their daughter’s medical bill as she is set to undergo a heart surgery in India to save her life.
Scolah Chepkoech, 25 years old, daughter to Mr William Rotich and Grace Rotich is set to undergo a heart surgery in India but her family cannot raise the Ksh1.5 million shillings for the operation.
Chepkoech, who is now a mother of three was forced to drop out of school in standard 7 because of the disease.
She lives with her father, who has nine children and is a casual labourer in the village and can longer cater for her medical bills.
“She was taken to Kapenguria district hospital for two months where she received treatment but her situation worsened and was referred to Eldoret Teaching and referral hospital for further examination where she was hospitalised for five months costing us more than 450,000 shillings,”said the Father.
However, the mother was advised to go to a specialised hospital where the daughter can get an intense medical examination to ascertain her condition correctly.
The family is now appealing to well-wishers to support their daughter access medication since they cannot afford the amount required.
Her mother laments that she cannot sleep at night when the minor cries of pain while she cannot afford every two weeks for drugs that suppress the pain.
When we visited her at their home she looked healthy but her mother said her situation changes abruptly and she develops breathing complications.
“My daughter is always on drugs which are very expensive. She uses very strong painkillers on a daily basis but the doctor said they can’t help.
I, therefore, rely on friends and well-wishers from around Kapchilla village who support me to cater for her medical bills,” said the mother.
“We want the National government to put a subsidy on the treatment of patients suffering from cancer and heart diseases so that they can get the treatment at a low cost .Many are forced to go to India and it is expensive,” he said.
West Pokot governor Simon Kachapin asked the national government to stabilise and increase funds in the Health sector to ensure affordable healthcare for Kenyans citing that county governments can’t manage alone.
“The same doctors that treat people in government hospitals are found in private hospitals and are very expensive. The health sector deals with the sensitive issue of human life and should be given the seriousness it deserves ,”said Kachapin.
