A family from Bituyu village, Mautuma location in Lugari sub county has camped on Nzoia River for five consecutive days, searching for the body of a 13-year-old daughter who drowned in the river last week.
According to the deceased’s Mother Mrs. Ann Nasimiyu Shikuku, her daughter Mary Mmbone left home in the company of her friends on Friday last week to fetch firewood near the river when she met her death.
Mrs. Shikuku said after collect firewood the children were thirsty and decided to quench their thirst in the river.
However, she said after drinking water they decided to swim in the swollen river before her daughter was swept away by the raging waters. “I was informed of the incident at about 5:30 pm and when I went to the scene I only saw her clothes,” said the mother.
She said since Saturday morning, family members together with local divers have tried all means possible to find the body but all has been in vain.
The distressed mother said according to the African traditions it is not right for the body to be left to disappear in that manner saying it should be found and buried in a reverential way.
She has appealed to the government and other diving experts’ help to enable them find the remains of her daughter.
