Residents of Mjini area in Mumias are counting losses after their crops were destroyed by the county government of Kakamega in the process of road construction along the Mjini -Lumino road.
Led by Rajab Okumu the residents said that they do support development that is done by the county government so they are surprised to see their crops destroyed without their consent.
“Let the county government stop abusing us, we also have our rights, the governor just started destroying our plants in the name of road construction without even giving us a notice,” stated Okumu.
They urged the governor for Kakamega county Wycliffee Oparanya to involve them in everything that goes on in that region instead of destroying their crops unaware.
“County government of Kakamega is really exploiting us, They should do things constitutionally; instead of supporting us because we voted him in power he is exploiting us, what shall we do?” he asserted.
They furthered their accusation to the county government of Kakamega for sabotaging them in every development despite them supporting the development that the county does.
“We always support his development in this region but from the look of the things he is like he does not care about us, why he did not involve us in the road construction, wish he informed us earlier that the county government wants to extend roads then we were to know what to do,” Okumu added.
“Again was it a must that he extends the roads now? It was better for him to wait till we harvest our crops. Surely how will we get out of poverty if at all the county government is doing this to us?” He affirmed.
They therefore plea with the national government to rescue them from such exploitation.
“Where shall we get food since our crops are completely destroyed? We plead with the national government to intervene and rescue us from this exploitation from the county government,” one of the residents emphasized.
