Farmers in Nandi county have been urged to practice arable and mixed farming and stop relying on maize alone due to its disease challenges that has been affecting production for quite some time.
This was said by the speakers who made their remarks on World Food Day commemoration that was held at Koilot farmers Cooperative Society grounds in Olessos ward Nandi hills constituency where more than twenty exhibitors graced the occasion.
Everyone who rose to spoke called upon each and every farmer in the region to practice arable farming that is vegetables and cereals instead of depending only on maize.
They said maize farming has become a great challenge to farmers who run at a loss due to its disease known as Maize Lethal Necrosis thus required to change their minds and invest in other crops which add value.
Apart from that farmers were also reminded to consider their food security by investing in crops that take the shortest period of time to its maturity e.g sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes,peas,beans, and vegetables.
The farmers were taught different kinds of foods by the exhibitors and the kinds of certified seeds that are advisable for farming.
