In order to acquire high yields, farmers across western Kenya have been called upon to prepare their lands well and use seedlings from SeedCo Company, which has conducted research and developed the best seedlings for them.
Antony Bakari, the company’s head of agronomy and product development, says they offer a variety of seedlings, including Tembo 73, which takes 4 to 5 months to harvest and can yield up to 58 bags per acre.
He added that they also have Twiga 803, which is very beneficial for farmers as it takes 4 and a half months to be ready for harvest. It can yield 45 to 48 bags of maize and is also efficient during post-harvest storage.
Bakari also disclosed that they have a new seedling called Punda Milia 555, which he describes as deep green in color and very strong. Farmers can expect to harvest up to 45 bags per acre.
He further added that they also have Duma 419, which takes only three and a half months to be ready for harvest. This variety is tolerant to drought and can yield up to 40 bags.
Bakari advised farmers to till their land at least twice and also harrow it before planting, as this will provide the seedlings with a good environment for germination.
He also recommended that farmers use the proper fertilizer for planting, stating that they currently use Yara fertilizer, which he suggests for farmers in the region.
