There was an unusually low turnout of hopeful Kenya Defence Forces recruits during the recruitment exercise in Pokot central sub county.
The youths in the area failed to appear in the recruitment exercise after the heavy rains and landslides made the road impassable after a number of bridges were swept away.
Most of the families are still mourning the deaths of their families and were also in low spirits, unable to allow their sons to attend the recruitment exercise.
The Weiwei bridge which links Sigor and Chesogon divisions and the Marich bridge linking part of Sekerr division have been rendered impassable and youths were not able to reach Sigor primary school which was the recruitment centre.
Close to 70 male candidates turned up for the recruitment exercise as the females were not being recruited.
Speaking after successful candidates were recruited Lieutenant colonel Labata who was the officer in charge said the turn out was very low because of the tragedy that affected the area recently.
“Despite the flash floods affecting some of the areas the exercise was carried well and we are optimistic we have taken the best out of this region,” said Labata.
He added that the other challenge was that some candidates had certificates that were not compatible with their identification cards.
“The names on the academic certificates of some youths who turned up for the exercise were not the same names that are on the identification cards. This is a challenge that youths need to be aware of. The names should be the same in all the certificates.” he said.
He added that the ones recruited will represent the whole country and they are looking forward to ensure that the KDF has all faces of Kenyans from all regions.
