Parents and other stakeholders in Mt. Elgon Constituency have been called upon to take care of the girl child to ensure they undertake education same as the boy child.
This comes after twenty girls were confirmed pregnant at Chelebei secondary school in Mt Elgon constituency.
Speaking after visiting the school on a fact finding mission Bungoma County education CEC Berly Mutekhele said it is unfortunate that the girls had to be impregnated at such a tender age when they were pursuing their education saying together with other relevant offices they are following the matter to have the culprits brought to book.
She disclosed to have had a meeting with the schools deputy principal David Emachar saying the affected girls are supposed to be in class and even after delivering they should be readmitted to ensure they complete their education.

The CEC said together with the national government they will be mounting sensitization programs in the entire Mt Elgon region to sensitize the parents the need for educating the girl child same to the boy child saying they are endangered and are supposed to be taken care of.
“Only two years ago we witnessed such an incident at Chepkurukuru primary school and after various meetings we thought the issue had been dealt with but it is unfortunate that we are witnessing the same but in the secondary section” she said
She further called upon the girls in the school to be cautious and careful saying they have a future to secure and should not allow boys and men to destruct it by engaging in extra marital affairs which she says results in to early pregnancies.
However the school having a population of four hundred students is said to be in dire need of boarding facilities to have the students remain at school throughout the term as many negative encounters are normally met on their way to school in the morning as well as in the evening.
